The St. Michael Garden Ministry has been active since 2009 with the establishment of the Food Bank Garden. We currently have three objectives:
1. Grow vegetables for the Snohomish Food Bank
2. Grow flowers for sanctuary arrangements and Food Bank bouquets
3. Maintain the landscape around St. Gabriel House and Rectory
Our typical year starts with prepping and planting the garden usually in April. We work on Tuesday mornings for about 2 hours. Once harvest starts, usually mid-July, we also work on Friday mornings and harvest twice a week through September. Each of the last two years, we’ve harvested about 2,500 pounds of vegetables for the Snohomish Food Bank. Our growing methods are organic and sustainable. Growing beds are mulched, paths are wood chipped, and there is an automatic drip irrigation system to handle watering. The Food Bank directs the crops that we grow and typical ones are peas, beans, beets, carrots, potatoes, summer squash, corn, tomatoes and cucumbers. We are also increasingly growing flowers - for bouquets for the Food Bank as well as sanctuary arrangements. As time permits, we also work on the landscapes around both St. Gabriel House (Red House) and the rectory. In the “off” season (fall, winter, early spring) we typically schedule several work days for larger landscape projects, such as clearing out old weedy flower beds or spreading wood chips.
